PRESIDENTIAL TAX RETURN DISCLOSURE

WHEREAS THE Jamestown Democratic Town Committee is in favor of legislative initiatives to insure an educated electorate and transparency in the financial dealings of candidates for local, State and Federal elections, and

WHEREAS bills have been introduced in the 2018 Rhode Island General Assembly (S-2612 and H-7877) to require Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates to release five years of their tax returns in order to be on the Rhode Island general election ballot beginning in 2020 or lose their place on the ballot, and

WHEREAS there is the potential in 2020 and beyond for one or more candidates of either party to have significant financial holdings that might affect the impartiality of their elected responsibilities if not so disclosed, and

WHEREAS similar bills failed to be reported to the floor for votes in 2017 Rhode Island General Assembly legislative session,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Jamestown Town Democratic Committee hereby endorse the passage of S-2612 and H-7877 as a means to ensure financial transparency in the 2020 Presidential election in RI in 2020 and beyond,

AND BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this resolution be conveyed to the Speaker of the House and our representative Deb Ruggerio, the President of the Senate and our senator Dawn Euer, and the Chairs of the House and Senate Judiciary Committees to urge these officials to bring this important legislation to the floor of their respective chambers for a vote in the 2018 legislative session.
