WHEREAS: the actions of the administration of President Donald Trump reflect xenophobia, sexism, bigotry, obscurantism, an undermining of public education, an advocacy of the use of torture, undue influence by the financially powerful, violation of the Constitution’s emoluments clause, a disregard of usual norms of ethics, obvious conflicts of interest, an endangerment of basic health care, a denial of accepted science, a willful degradation of the environment, a deliberate cultivation of mistrust of the news media, and a vindictiveness towards dissidents; and
WHEREAS: such actions are in striking contradiction to core American values as laid out in the Constitution, including, more specifically, those protected under the First Amendment, which provides that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances; and
WHEREAS: these actions bespeak the antithesis of long accepted truths we hold self-evident, notably those evidenced and protected by the Civil Rights Act, the Equal Opportunity in Education Act, and the Immigration Reform and Control Act, which laws champion equal treatment and protection under law for all persons regardless of ethnicity, citizenship, gender identity or sexual orientation, religion, socioeconomic status, political affiliation, or age; and
WHEREAS: because of these actions by the President, we believe it is necessary to declare our intent to preserve and protect, through all lawful means, the American truths and values that our forefathers, and the majority of Americans, have long accepted and held dear;
THEREFORE, it is hereby RESOLVED that we support Senators Reed and Whitehouse and Representative Cicilline in their efforts to promote and advance, in every practical way, legislation, nominees, and appropriations that conform to the highest ideals of our country, and to vigorously oppose legislation, nominees, and appropriations which do not.
LET IT BE KNOWN that this resolution was passed by the Jamestown Democratic Town Committee on the 13th day of April 2017.
